*Literature & Language Arts: After students had a conversation about their annotations with their reading group, they were able to utilize the remaining time reading and annotationg for the next assigned pages. *Literature: Students got together with their Lit. Group to discuss the book and the annotations they made. Then they spent the remainder of the time reading and annotating.
*Language Arts: The mini lesson today dealt with selecting. Examples were read to generate an idea. Students went through their entries to search for a theme or one particular experience that is most meaningful.

*Literature: Students got together with their Lit. Group to discuss the book and the annotations they made. Then they spent the remainder of the time reading and annotating.

*Literature: Students had to gather background information about the memoir they were assigned to read in order to be able to have a clearer understanding while they read.
*Language Arts: We had another mini-lesson for generating ideas. Students had to make a list of particular family pictures. Students need to bring in a family picture along with a description by Monday, April 30th.

*Literature: We went over the annotations for chapters 21 -28 for Knucklehead. Assignment was given to read and annotate to the end of the book.

*Literature: We went over the annotations for chapters 12 - 20, then students began to read and annotate chapters 21 -28.
*Language Arts: After the mini-lesson on the use of dialogue, students wrote in their Writer's Journals a memory of dialogue. Then students worked on writing a poem.

*Literature: We went over the annotations for Knucklehead chapters 4-11. Then the students were assigned chapters 12-20 (read and annotate).
*Language Arts: Another mini-lesson started the class, which the focus was on making meaning and reflection. Students had to draw a picture of one of their memories. As a class, we went through generating ideas and created a simple poem. Students generated ideas on a topic. A poem will need to be written by Apirl 24th.

*Literature: We went over the annotations for the first three chapters of Knucklehead. Students were assigned to read and annotate chapters 4 -11, which they had the remainder of the class to get a lot (if not all) of the work completed.
*Language Arts: We had another immersion mini-lesson for memoir using a book titled "Home". We discussed what Home means. Students needed to write in their Writer's Journals about Home and what it means to them.

*Literature: Students had some time to work on the Jon Scieszka Scavenger hunt and then we went over the answers. Knucklehead by Jon Scieszka was introduced, along with the annotation sheet students will use for this book. Students were assigned chapters 1 -3.
*Language Arts: We started our next unit in the Writer's Workshop. We are now going to be working in the genre of memoir. Students wrote at least four of their favorite memories in their Writing Journals.

*Literature: Before students had time to work on their poem projects, we reivewed the porticn of the practice PARCC test they completed yesterday. Points were made on how they should approach the questions, and reading the selections given.
*Langurage Arts: We went over another Langston Hughes poem, "Dream Variations". Students wrote in their notebooks what they notice, and what they wonder about the poem. We then discussed the poem, and pointed out the different poetic devices used. We then went over examples to figure out rhyme pattern, and then examples of figurative language.

*Literature & Language Arts: Started class with the poem "Road Less Traveled" - we discussed the meaning, the poetic devices used, and discussed "what I notice" , "what I wonder". Then the students cut and pasted two poems in their Writing Journals and noted the same things we did with the poem we did together. Some students shared what they wrote. Students then had a whole period to work on their poetry projects.

*Literature & Language Arts: We started class by reviewing making inferences and drawing conclusions.
Then we started our Poetry Unit by going over examples of figurative language terms an examples. We then pointed out poetic devices using the poem Dreams by Langston Hughes. The poetry packet was passed out and requirements explained. Then students started looking for figurative language examples in a number of poetry books from the library (librarian pulled to use in our classroom for the unit).

*Literature & Language Arts: Students listened to the next Flocabulary Unit. The packet is due April 13th.
Students then were paired with a peer to go over their biography projects on Book Creator. First they needed to make sure that the information was written in story form and made sense, then the students had a checklist to assist in editing the project. Students saved their project to their google drive. All projects need to be uploaded to Seesaw by tomorrow morning.

*Literature & Language Arts: Another chapter from Temple Grandin was read aloud, and students then followed with a response in their Reading Journals. Students were given the biography final products, which will be due March 23rd (earlier for anyone leaving early for vacation). They need to create either a biographical sketch, or collection of stories using Book Creator on their iPads. Students will also need to create a first person presentation for the biography subject they are writing about and post it to the Seesaw Blog.

*Literature & Language Arts: A chapter from Temple Grandin biography was read aloud, and then students responded in their Readers Notebooks. A mini-lesson was taught on finding out what to say, and organizing their biographies. Students then had to reflect on their research thus far and answer a set of questions. Students then continued to research their chosen subject. Students were told that the final products for their biography subjects is due Friday, March 23rd (anyone leaving before then will have to complete their project ahead of time).

*We went to Forrestal School for the Read With Me program first thing in the morning. Students did a wonderful job with their buddies!
*Literature & Language Arts: Most students received their stem tests back and put their results on Seesaw. Students then worked on their double-bubble maps for their compare/contrast paper on their chosen biography subjects from the annotations they did.
*Students were given an informational letter for parents to sign, which asks that parents bring their child to the library to get 4 different sources on a person of the students choosing. They will be writing a biography on this particular person.

*Read With Me program visit to North Chicago School will be tomorrow, Thursday, February 22nd. Students need to have signed permission slip handed in to attend.
*Literature: Second chapter in Temple Grandin's biography was read aloud, and the students responded in thier reader's notebooks. Then the students started to create a double-bubble map on two of the people they annotated previously (a male and a female with the same occupation/profession from the books "...Rocked the World"). Students will be writing a compar/contrast essay on the two biographies read.
*Language Arts: Students took the Latin stem/word test, and then took the review of Unit 2 of Flocabulary. Then students were given time to look up biography subjects that they may be interested in reading/writing about.
*Students were given an informational letter for parents to sign, which asks that parents bring their child to the library to get 4 different sources on a person of the students choosing. They will be writing a biography on this particular person.

*Read With Me program visit to North Chicago School will be this Thursday, February 22nd. Students need to have signed permission slip handed in to attend.
*Literature: Started to read aloud a biography, Temple Grandin:How the Girl Who Loved Cows Embraed Autism and Changed the World. We discussed how the features are similar to our mentor texts, but a longer biography. We discussed how there are many biographies written. The second set of annotations were handed back and the next two upcoming assignments were described: 1)compare/contrast essay on one of the females to one of the males "that rocked the world" which had the same profession, and 2)choose one of the people they annotated and "become" the person - video tape themselves and put it on Seesaw.
*Language Arts: We went over the grammar starter, and their answers were handed back. Students were given their Flocabulary quizes on they put them on Seesaw. Then we had another mini-lesson on generating ideas using "Salt in My Shoes". Students then responded in their Writer's notebooks about someone that they know that inspires them and why. *Students were given an informational letter for parents to sign, which asks that parents bring their child to the library to get 4 different sources on a person of the students choosing. They will be writing a biography on this particular person.

*Language Arts: After taking a brief quiz on parts of speech (which the starter has been on for the past couple weeks), students then put last week's Latin quiz on Seesaw. Then the students received a few of their written papers to put into their binders. The students then filled out a reflection sheet on their own writing.

*Language Arts: After class starter, we had a mini-lesson. It as the first lesson on generating ideas. We discussed role models. For homework, students are suppose to dicusss with someone at home who their role models are and why.

*The whole 5th grade introduced the service idea of "Spread the Love". Students need to pick a service idea to participate in by next Friday, January 19th. This could be done individually or with a group. As a class, a plan is to order a t-shirt for our service class project. All the proceeds, after the initial cost of the t-shirts, will go to a charity. A day to participate at Feed My Starving Children as a group will be forthcoming. Student's choice of service needs to be completed by February 14th.

*Literature: We had a mini-lesson on Types of Characters and Characters Undergo Change, we discussed the ideas using the book The Lamplighter. Then students wrote what conflict/conflicts are occurring in their own novel, and the different type of characters.
*Language Arts: Students were given back two Latin quizzes, one from before break and the one they took yesterday. Yesterday's Latin quiz was on all of the stems/words thus far. It will not be assessed for their report card, it was to show what they know and don't know, and how much effort they will need going forward. Students worked on their rough draft 2nd body paragraph and their conclusion, which both need to be completed by tomorrow (just the rough draft).

*Literature: Class was started with a mini-lesson on Passing of Time in fiction. Then students read their independent reading novel and wrote down examples of the passing of time in their Reading Notebooks.
*Language Arts: Students took a Cumulative Quiz for the Latin stems/words for review. Then the students put the next five stems into Quizlet: ject:throw, dorm:sleep, magn:great, ver:true, and put:think.
Students then worked on organizing their thoughts for their compare/contrast essays, and then began to write the introduction for the essay. The introduction and 1st body paragraph needs to be completed by tomorrow.

*Literature: After the starter on inference, we had another mini-lesson. Today was referencing "Orienting to More Complex Texts": how we orient ourselves to nonfiction is different than fiction. They practiced the skill with a nonfiction book in the classroom, and then shared what they learned with a partner. Tonights homework deals with fluency. Students are to practice Lou Gehrig's Farewell Speech. Once they believe they are fluent, they are to record themselves and upload into their Seesaw account.
*Language Arts: After identifying the simple subject, simple predicate, and the prepositions within a particular sentence, we reviewed what an essay entails. In particular we discussed an explicit thesis, and an implied thesis. "Hey Ant" was read aloud and the students needed to write the implied thesis, and write about the conclusion and it's function.

*Literature: After doing the reading starter on cause and effect, the students were introduced to one of the reading programs we are piloting - Lucy Calkins, Tackling Complexity: Moving Up Levels of Nonfiction. We began by going over what they expect when reading fiction text, and discussed what they know of nonfiction text. Homework was assigned to read something nonfiction at home.

We then discussed theme, and they received a worksheet to fill out themes from the novel and give an explanation for the theme. They also received a sheet to describe the characteristics and physical attributes of the characters from the novel. They will have some class time tomorrow to work on the sheets, and they are due on Wednesday.

Students then had a few minutes if needed to tweet their double-bubble maps on the two novels. Once they handed their maps in, they took the AR reading and vocabulary quizzes for Walk Two Moons. They then had time to work on their Seesaw Book Report. This report is due October 5th, and needs to be posted on the seesaw blog.

*Literature: The Seesaw Book Review assignment was given, and instructions were handed out. This book review that they will post to the blog is due October 5th on the book they just read. I then finished reading our class novel aloud - most kids really enjoyed this book. It was exciting to see their expressions and hear their thoughts when revelations were given. All questions due Monday, October 2nd.
*Language Arts: After going over an adage, an explanation of a double-bubble map was given. This was a map that the students were introduced to in prior years. It is a compare/contrast map. The assignment was of the students to compare/contrast two texts: one of which is Walk Two Moons and the other is the book they just completed. They worked on it during class, and it needs to be completed by tomorrow.

*Literature: We went over the class starters (an adage and main idea). Then we went over the comprehension questions for chapters 32 & 32. Chapters 33 -35 were read aloud: the corresponding chapter questions need to be completed for homework.
*Language Arts: Those that did have their personal narrative papers typed were paired with someone. The pairs read each others stories, and helped assist with editing. Those that did not have their paper typed had to finish on their own, and won't have the opportunity for someone else to assist with editing. Published pieces were printed and handed in along with the other steps of the writing process (rough draft and the plot line). Students that did not hand it in, need to hand it in by tomorrow morning.

*Literature: Class starter was about theme. Students then wrote in their Reading Journals about the theme of the book they read this past summer. They added their completed book title to the list in the section My Reading Life in their Reading Journals. Chapters 13 - 15 were read aloud and discussed. Students need to complete the comprehension questions for chapters 13 - 15 for homework.
*Language Arts: After the class starter on metaphor, the students took the Latin Quiz. When they finished, they put the next five Latin stems in Quizlet . They were told to add to the previous list, not to start a new one. After inputting today's five, all students should have a list of 15 Latin stems/words. The 5 new stems and meanings are the following: un - not, inter - between, semi - half, dis - away, and sym - together.
-We then had a mini-lesson on generating ideas when you have writer's block. Then the students started a list about themselves in their writers notebooks.

*Literature: The class starter was done during Language Arts, which was on "main idea". Then we had the first part of Mock Battle of the Books! Overall, students did very well - proud of our summer readers! The winner from each class periods will be going against each other on Thursday of this week during recess.
-After the mock battle, students received their quizzes back for chapters 1 - 11. Some didn't do as well as expected, but it let them know what is expected. Some student's answers were incomplete. I let them know that this was the beginning, there is time to make adjustments. If a student doesn't understand or needs more clarification, they have the opportunity to ask during class and/or study skills. It also is a red flag for some to pay attention during class. Students put their quiz on Seesaw, parents please make a comment so I know that it was seen: Or the quiz needs to be signed and returned.

*Language Arts: After the class starter on metaphor and analogy relationship, we had a mini-lesson on "Author's Inspiration". We reviewed the books that have been part of the mini-lessons. Then students needed to fill out a sheet on "Memorable Places", make "Observations" for those places (using the 5 senses) , and their" Emotional Response". All students were given enough time to complete in class, however if they didn't complete they need to do for homework.

Students then found out who was in their groups for our Mock Battle of the Books on Tuesday. They got in their groups to discuss the books they read and the strategies they will take for the books that weren't read.
*Language Arts: After discussing the class starter (relationship between metaphor and analogy), I went over all that needed to be complete/signed. I reiterated the fact that starting Tuesday, if anything assigned is late that they will receive a Late Notice that will need to be signed and returned. Then students wrote in their Writing Journals, in the independent section, about anything in 5th grade thus far. If they completed a page, they were allowed to silently read.

*Language Arts: After the class starter (metaphor:animal to weather), students logged into the Seesaw app. This is the place that parents are invited to see students work and comment rather than signing a paper copy of particular quizzes/tests/papers. An invite should be going home with your student in order for parents to join. Students will be able to use this app for our class blog (i.e. one minute book reviews).
Graded Latin stem tests were returned to the students. Students took a picture of their quiz - please comment so I know that you saw your child's score. All quizzes/tests/papers need to be signed and returned or a picture needs to be taken by the student on Seesaw and a parent needs to comment.

Students had to finish reading chapter 11 and do the comprehension questions for both of the chapters for homework.

Then we had a mini lesson on "A Writer's Ear". I read the book The Other Way to Listen aloud, and discussed the meaning of really listening in nature. Students wrote in their writing journals of what voices they hear in nature.

*Fill out picture form and return it to school for picture day on Wednesday, August 30th.
*Literature: All students took the STAR reading test.
*Questions for chapters 5 & 6 for Walk Two Moons are due tomorrow.
*Students put their names under the summer reading book they read. Groups will be formed for the mock Battle of the Books which will be September 5th (same time their summer reading book needs to be completed, along with the AR test completed).
*Language Arts: Students logged into NoRedInk.com and signed up using their google account along with a class code. First each student chose preferences of particular interest. Then they started to take a diagnostic test in regards to grammar. Some students still need to complete the test. They were to have created an app for their iPad for this site before they left class.
*Latin quiz on Wednesday! Study!!
August 25, 2017
*Fill out picture form and return it to school for picture day on Wednesday, August 30th.
*Those that did not decorate their notebooks need to do so by Monday.
*Literature: Students first filled out a reading life survey. Then we went over the questions for chapters three and four. I then read chapters five and six aloud, meanwhile discussing different points for understanding. The questions are not due for homework this weekend, however they will be due next Tuesday.
*Language Arts: Students first filled out what the definition of a simile and metaphor was, and then had to write an example of each. We have been working on this during the class starter all week, they have also done work on them last year. Some students still struggle with know what they are and giving examples. We will continue to work on them, along with other forms of figurative language.
* Students watched the first unit of vocabulary (Flocabulary) - twice. Each student was given a packet of the vocabulary words. Each word needs to be correctly put into a sentence and then a picture drawn to represent the word. The packet/sheets are due September 8th, and there will be a quiz on the words on that date also.
August 24, 2017
*In homeroom, students were given picture forms to be filled out and returned. Picture day is next week, Wednesday August 30th.
*Reading and Writing Journals need to be decorated by tomorrow.
*Literature: After the class starter, we went over the questions for chapters 1 & 2 for Walk Two Moons. Then the students made a prediction in their Reading Journals on what they thought would happen in the story. I then read aloud chapters 3 & 4. Students need to complete the corresponding questions for the chapters I read today.
*Language Arts: After the class starter, students once again tried to log in to Quizlet. This time almost all of them were successful because Mr. Costes removed the app and made it a web link. So all students should have the first group of Latin stems in Quizlet to study from.
-Students then had a couple minutes to finish describing the picture they had drawn. They were told they should describe it enough that someone else who read it could see in their minds-eye the same picture they see (or at least very similar). Then there was a mini-lesson where I read "The Other Side" by Jacqueline Woodson. Students then needed to write in their writing journals. They had a choice to either answering "Would you have sat on the fence and gone to the other side if you were told not to? Why or Why not?" or respond to Woodson's reason for writing "How powerful kids can be."

*Literature: After the class starter, students wrote in their Reading Journals. They wrote a "List of Completed Books" and "List of Books I Want to Read" in the My Reading Life section. They started writing down the books they completed last year up until now.
-Students then completed the Anticipation Guide for Walk Two Moons, and then tried to give the meaning of "Don't judge a man until you've walked two moons in his moccasins." and then predicted what it will mean in the book. I then read aloud the first two chapters. Students need to completed the questions that correspond to the chapters read.
*Language Arts: After the class starter, the first 5 Latin stems/words were introduced. Students tried to put them into Quizlet - however there seems to be a glitch right now. Hopefully we will remedy the problem. So for now, students need to study the old-fashioned way. The current 5 stems are bi (two), sub (under), de (down), pre (before), and super (over). The quiz is next Wednesday. We then had a mini-lesson. Students were to use their "mind's eye" and draw pictures of what I read aloud. Then I showed them the pictures from the book from which I read Come on Rain . Students then used one of their pictures to write about in their Writing Journal or they could draw another picture and write about that.

*Literature: After a class starter, the students continued to work on "Me as a Reader" in their journals. They then used tabs to create three different sections in their journals: Read Aloud/Class Novel, Independent Reading, and My Reading Life. The author of the first class novel was introduced, Sharon Creech. Students put papers in their binders, and started to answer the anticipation guide.
*Reading goal sheet was collected; Those that didn't return it need to do so.
*Language Arts: We began the class with a class starter (reviewing metaphor and nouns). Then we went over the "Writing Inventory" sheet as a class, and then the kids put them in their binders. We had a mini-lesson on what goes in a writer's notebook. We discussed what they did last year, and what it could and would look like this year. Students then wrote in their writers notebooks what they imagine their notebook will look like.

*Literature: Students were told the expectations of independent reading. Each student received a goal sheet that they signed, and need to get a parent signature. The four due dates for this trimester were written in the student's assignment notebooks.
*Language Arts: Students started to fill out a "Writing Inventory" sheet, which needs to be completed for homework if not completed during the day.
*Students need to decorate both of their journals: writing and reading.

*Students completed the reading assessment, and also completed a writing prompt.
*Students also completed questions about themselves and then also interviewed a classmate.
*Students were given another journal. They will need to decorate both their journals (Reading Journal and Writing Journal), so they were told they could do it this weekend since they probably won't have any other homework (but it is not mandatory).

Today we went through the overview of the curriculum for the year, and as we progress we will get more specific.
Students took a diagnostic assessment. If they completed the assessment, then they continued to work on the questionnaire they were given yesterday.
